Treating Genital Warts

The warts in women have the same appearance as of those infected men have; they vary in size from small to large cluster of several warts.

Genital Warts Symptoms and Treatments

When it comes to treating genital warts,it is important to see a doctor as soon as you notice any symptoms to positively diagnose the warts.

Genital Warts are flesh or gray colored bumps that are a result of a viral infection. They are found on and in the genitals of infected individuals.

They are one of the most commonly found sexually transmitted disease affecting both men and women at almost any age. The infection rate is high mainly because infection symptoms are not obvious and people tend not to see the warts and remain sexually active.

Causes of Genital Warts

Warts are the result of an infection caused by the human papillomavirus or HPV. There are many different types of HPV but only two types that occur commonly in genital warts infections. The problem with HPV is that some forms of the virus have the potential to cause cancer; the virus has been associated with precancerous changes in cervical cells.

The virus enters the skin and mucosal surfaces of the genitals through small cuts or abrasions that occur during sexual intercourse. Once in the body they do not immediately start forming warts but may lay dormant for a period. The implication is that infected individuals are unaware of the infection and may continue to spread the virus through sexual contact with multiple partners. When treating genital warts is very important for the couple to get treatment together.

Symptoms of Genital Warts

Genital warts are generally painless and in some cases individuals may not even be aware of the warts. However, in some case genital warts cause itching.

The only indication of their presence might be their noticeable size and location. They may be as small as a millimeter wide or larger if the warts cluster together. In some cases the warts are accompanied by a discharge. Warts can become more than a nuisance if form in the urinary tract opening. The wart may cause an obstruction which may lead to bleeding.

Symptoms of Genital Warts in Women

The warts in women have the same appearance as of those infected men have; they vary in size from small to large cluster of several warts. The warts appear in the moister area of the genitals such as the labia and around the vagina's opening. If warts appear on the outer genitals then there is a probability that they also be in the cervix. Cervical genital warts could be a precursor to cervical cancer.

Symptoms of Genital Warts in Men

In men, genital warts can appear in the urethra, penis, scrotum and around the rectum. The warts are identifiable by being either raised or smooth or cauliflower like and rough. Sometimes the warts can be hidden behind the foreskin making them harder to notice especially the patient does not have any other symptoms.

Treatment of Genital Warts

Treating Genital Warts If warts are suspected it is important to see a doctor to positively diagnose the warts. There is no real self treatment for warts except to leave them alone since they are contagious. They may eventually fall off. Do not have sex as they are highly contagious. In some cases, especially if warts are on the cervix, doctors may use cryotherapy; a process where they are frozen off, laser treatment; use lasers to destroy the warts and electrodessication; this method uses an electric current to destroy the HPV. Outpatient surgery under local anesthesia is another way of treating genital warts.

Preventing the Spread of HPV

Gardasil, a new vaccine that was developed in 2006 has been used in women to prevent the spread of HPV infections. It is effective only in women who have not been previously exposed to the virus. Abstinence, keeping sexual partners to a minimum and the use of condoms are other ways that the medical communities educate the general population to stop the spread of the HPV.

Remember treating genital warts takes time and you should always wear protection when having sex.
