Lower High Cholesterol

If you manage your weight, diet and increase your physical activity, this can help bring the LDL down to normal levels.

Lower High Cholesterol- It Can Be Deadly

You will find that high-cholesterol rarely causes any symptoms. However, over time if this condition is left untreated it will often lead to atherosclerosis.

This means that the flow of blood is eventually blocked as it travels through your arteries to the tissues of your body.

In severe cases this may often result in stroke, angina, heart attack as well as other serious complications.

So.... it is best to lower high cholesterol and enjoy a more healthy life.

In people who have gotten this condition as an inherited trait, this may form deposits under the eyes, in the tendons and around the cornea.

If you manage your weight, diet and increase your physical activity, this can help bring the LDL down to normal levels.

A diet low in saturated fat

Diet

You should reduce the amount of saturated fat as well as cholesterol in your diet. This helps to lower the blood cholesterol levels. You should have a diet that is low in saturated fat. This should make up less than 7% of your calories. If you want to eat foods that are low in saturated fat, then try some of the following: lean meats, skinless poultry, fruits, fish, whole grain foods and vegetables.

You should also aim at trying to eat between 10-25 grams of fiber each day, especially soluble fiber. Certain vegetables and fruits such as pears, carrots, dried peas and beans, oranges, Brussels sprouts and oats do not contain any dietary cholesterol. They will also help you to excrete it before you absorb it into your bloodstream.

Weight

It is not good to be overweight as it is a risk factor for contracting heart disease and it will increase your cholesterol.

Losing weight will help to lower high cholesterol levels.

Physical Activity

If you lead a sedentary life, you are putting yourself at risk for heart disease. Regular physical activity will help to lower the "bad" and raise the "good" levels and will even help you to lose weight. Try being active for 30 minutes 3 times a week and see what a difference it will make the next time your cholesterol levels are checked.

Treatment For High Cholesterol

Dietary changes along with drug therapy are often used to lower these levels to something more manageable. There are a variety of medications available on the market today that will help to lower high cholesterol. These include statins, niacin, acid sequestrants and fibric acids. Your physician will be able to help you decide which is the right medication for you.

Statins - May be well-tolerated and effective in most patients. In order to lower "bad" cholesterol levels, the following drugs are usually prescribed by physicians: Lipitor, Lescol, Mevacor, Pravachol, Crestor and Zocor.

Statins are drugs that work in one's liver in order to interrupt the bad-cholesterol formation from the circulating blood.

Zetia- This is a newer drug that helps to lower LDL. Sometimes it is prescribed along with a statin.

Bile acid sequestrants- These also help to lower LDL levels and may be used along with statins.

Niacin- This is a B vitamin that lowers both the triglyceride and LDL levels. It is quite effective in raising HDL levels. Some of the side effects of niacin include the following: hot flashes, indigestion, high blood sugar, nausea and gas.

Fibric acids- These are mainly used to treat low HDL levels and high triglyceride levels. In the United States, three of these drugs are currently available: Lopid, Tricor and clofibrate.

Self-care

If you hear the news from your doctor that your LDL levels are too high, then you should spring into action and make a plan to lower high cholesterol levels. If you lower these levels, you will reduce the chance of having a stroke or a heart attack.

If you manage your weight, diet and increase your physical activity, this can help bring the LDL down to normal levels.
